Google to come up with RCS based CHAT, a carrier-based App Integration named Android Messages

Google has been continuously trying to mark its place over other competitors in social media and messaging apps. To give tough competition to other companies and capture market opportunities, Google has apps like Hangout, Messenger which directly compete with other companies apps like WhatsApp and Facebook.

In a statement to The Verge, Google has confirmed to replace SMS with "CHAT", a carrier-based service based on Rich Communication Services(RCS).

RCS is the future of SMS and its capabilities extend beyond messaging. RCS offers read receipts, typing notifications, larger image and video file sharing, and works over Wi-Fi and LTE. CHAT will not be a separate app, instead will take place of default Android messaging app.

If the user you are chatting with, does not have CHAT enabled or uses the non-Android phone, messages will be sent over standard SMS.
Coming to security point of view, CHAT will not support end-to-end encryption because the standard is implemented at the carrier level. Google will timely provide updates in the messaging app itself to improve the user experience.

As of now, there are 55 carriers and 11 smartphones supporting CHAT as the successor of SMS. Google has announced its partnership with many phone makers like Sony, Motorola, LG and Huawei to replace the default SMS app with Android messages.

Google also confirmed moving all its ALLO resources into Android messages to provide a more interactive platform to its users.

Some more features are expected in this new default messaging app like Smart Reply, better search features, Desktop-based interface, Google Photos integration.
